Garden Waterproofing

3 October 2017

A roof garden or planter hides its waterproofing beneath drainage layers, protection and soil. That makes early decisions especially important. The structure, substrate, planting arrangement and expected moisture exposure affect the system and the way it is protected during landscaping. The drainage route and overflow should be considered alongside the membrane, not after planting.

Edges, outlets, roots, penetrations and movement joints create details that need to remain continuous and accessible where possible. If water appears below an established planter, removing finishes without first mapping the likely pathway can create unnecessary work. An inspection should consider the outlet, wall interfaces and construction history. Learn about Waterseal’s roof garden and planter box waterproofing service.

Protect the membrane beneath landscaping

Roof gardens and planters conceal their waterproofing beneath drainage, protection layers and soil. The membrane system should be selected for the structure, moisture exposure and planting conditions, with compatible protection so later landscaping work does not damage it.

Outlets and penetrations need careful detailing and access for maintenance. Drainage and overflow arrangements should be considered alongside the membrane scope. Before reinstating a leaking planter, investigate the substrate, joints and water pathways rather than assuming the visible damp marks identify the defect.
