Above-ground waterproofing includes exposed roofs, balconies and decks. These areas face rain, movement, sunlight and regular use in different combinations. The system has to suit the substrate and final finish while allowing water to drain and protecting the membrane through installation and service. A product choice without a detail for edges and outlets is an incomplete scope.
Junctions with walls, door thresholds, penetrations and changes of level deserve particular attention. For an existing leak, record whether symptoms follow rainfall, cleaning or another event and inspect the surrounding construction. Water may track before becoming visible below. Waterseal’s roof waterproofing and balcony and terrace waterproofing pages describe the relevant services.
Water exposure above ground
Roofs, balconies and exposed decks face different combinations of rainfall, movement, sunlight and use. A waterproofing system needs to suit that exposure together with the substrate and the proposed finish. Access for maintenance and protection of the completed membrane should be considered before installation.
Joints, edges, thresholds, outlets and penetrations interrupt otherwise continuous surfaces. These interfaces need compatible detailing, while drainage must provide a route for water to leave the area. Recurring leaks warrant investigation of the whole construction rather than treatment of the visible stain alone.
